Pineview Dam Seismic Upgrade

Weber Basin, UT
  • Contract: $2,850,000
  • Client: US Bureau of Reclamation
  • Duration: 9 months
This Bureau of Reclamation project involved the seismic bracing of an existing spillway structure as well as the refurbishment of radial gates, replacement of side seal plates, installation of strut beams and construction of a new hoist deck platform. The seismic bracing was accomplished by non impact drilling approximately 800 horizontal holes through the 6' thick spillway walls and then pressure grouting 2" diameter anchor bolts in place through the holes with metal plates on each side. Ground penetrating radar technology was used to locate the existing rebar within the walls and map it out on the wall with red paint prior to drilling in order to avoid it. The 35' tall gates were removed, lead paint abated and then reinstalled. The side seal plates embedded within the walls were perimeter saw cut, concrete was excavated with bushing hammers and new plates subsequently installed and grouted in place. Existing elevated concrete hoist deck was removed and a new hoist deck house constructed of cast in place concrete. All work was performed within the spillway with a containment system in place to prevent debris or drilling slurry from contaminating the river below.
